A Labour Party delegation recently visited the Malta Medicines Authority to gain a clearer understanding of how the pharmaceutical sector is evolving in line with Malta Vision 2050. The visit also included a tour of Malta’s first pharmacy to fully integrate robotics and artificial intelligence, offering a practical example of how innovation is improving patient care.

Work at the Malta Medicines Authority continues to focus on strengthening access to medicines, simplifying regulatory processes, and investing in digitalisation, research, and professional development. Public safety remains central to this effort, particularly as the sector adapts to new and emerging challenges. In 2025, the Authority issued more than 1,100 medicine authorisations and continues to monitor risks that could impact availability. Its active participation in European and international regulatory networks ensures Malta remains aligned with global standards.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the delivery of healthcare services. AI-driven systems are helping to safeguard the quality and efficiency of medicines while allowing pharmacists to dedicate more time to patient care. Automated processes, including the removal of medicines nearing expiry, are further strengthening safety and reliability across the system.

The delegation highlighted the importance of ensuring access to medicines while maintaining long-term sustainability, particularly for vulnerable groups. The Malta Medicines Authority remains a key institution in ensuring that new medicines and medical devices are introduced safely and efficiently, both locally and within the wider European market. The visit also underscored the value of continued collaboration between institutions. Strengthening coordination across the sector will be essential to meeting future challenges and delivering a healthcare system that is more efficient, more resilient, and better centred around the needs of patients, in line with the Vision 2050 targets.
