Spain secured their second FIFA World Cup title with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 final, thanks to Ferran Torres’ goal in the 106th minute.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Spain maintained control for much of the match and eventually found the breakthrough during extra time. Torres converted from close range after receiving a pass from substitute Nico Williams, scoring the decisive goal of the contest.
Spain created numerous opportunities throughout the game and finished with 20 shots, while Argentina were unable to register a shot on target. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez kept Argentina in the match with several important saves.

Argentina’s task became more difficult when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card late in normal time, reducing the defending champions to 10 players. Despite remaining organized defensively, Argentina struggled to create clear chances and came closest to an equaliser in stoppage time of extra time, when Giuliano Simeone’s effort went over the crossbar.

Lionel Messi, making what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance, was unable to help Argentina retain the title they won in 2022. The Argentine captain had limited involvement as Spain controlled possession and territory for large periods of the match.
The victory adds the 2026 World Cup to Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and extends their unbeaten record in tournament matches under head coach Luis de la Fuente. Spain’s previous World Cup title came in 2010.
