Physical activity plays an essential role in supporting a healthier and more resilient society. Malta Vision 2050 recognises that promoting active lifestyles contributes not only to recreation and wellbeing, but also to stronger communities and the development of national sporting talent.

Regular participation in sport and exercise delivers significant benefits across all age groups. Sustained levels of physical activity help reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity while also supporting mental wellbeing and overall quality of life. Greater participation in physical activity therefore contributes to improved public health outcomes and supports the long-term sustainability of the healthcare system.

Vision 2050 sets out measures that encourage participation in sport and physical activity across different stages of life. National targets aim to increase the proportion of people who engage in regular physical activity from 32 percent to 50 percent by 2035. Expanding access to opportunities for sport and exercise remains central to achieving this objective. Schools, community programmes and accessible public sports facilities all contribute to strengthening a culture of active living throughout society.

Investment in sports infrastructure represents another important element of this vision. Modern and accessible facilities provide safe environments where communities can participate in sport and recreational activity. Strong infrastructure supports wider participation while also encouraging greater social interaction and community engagement within neighbourhoods.

Vision 2050 also recognises the importance of supporting elite athletes and strengthening pathways for high performance sport. Success at the highest level requires sustained commitment, specialised training and professional support structures. Athletes representing Malta in international competitions serve as role models for younger generations while also strengthening national pride.

Access to structured training programmes, dedicated coaching, modern facilities and clear athlete development pathways allows Maltese athletes to continue competing successfully on the international stage while raising the country’s sporting profile.

Encouraging greater participation in physical activity while supporting athletic excellence reflects a broader national ambition. Sport forms an important part of everyday life in societies that prioritise health, wellbeing and community resilience.
