Stable energy prices allow more people to afford keeping their homes warm in winter. Since 2013, the rate of people in Malta that could not afford their energy bills has been drastically reduced.

While in 2013 one in every four people in Malta could not afford their energy bills, today one in every thirteen faces this difficulty.
Official Eurostat statistics show that in 2024, 9.2% of all European Union citizens found it difficult to keep their homes warm during winter — in other words, they could not afford their electricity, water, and gas bills.

Malta’s rate is substantially lower than countries such as Greece, Spain, France, Cyprus, Lithuania, and Portugal, and also lower than Italy and Slovakia, while being almost at the same level as the Netherlands.

When compared to the rate for this same indicator in 2013, Malta had 23.9% of the population who could not afford their electricity, water, and gas bills, while the European average at the time stood at 10.8%. This means that from 2013 onwards, while the EU average decreased by only 1.6 percentage points, Malta’s rate dropped by 16.1 percentage points.

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon attributed this improvement to the Government’s policy which, after substantially reducing energy bills in 2014, and kept them stable through subsidies after 2020.

Economic growth has resulted in more job creation, better distribution of wealth, and more money in people’s hands. Positive statistics boards are nice to look at, but affording energy bills and the comfort of warm homes are even better confirmation of
how much the Maltese and Gozitan people are benefiting from the strong economy the country enjoys.
