What started as a series of alarming social media posts soon became a full-scale investigation led by Animal Welfare officials, activist Dr Romina Frendo and the Police. Their joint efforts exposed the culprit and secured a conviction, a significant victory in Malta’s fight against animal cruelty.

This summer, the Facebook posts from Tas-Sliema seemed almost surreal—cats mysteriously disappeared or were found dead and mutilated. Social media, while useful, often isn’t the most reliable source of information. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the Department for Animal Welfare within the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, alongside dedicated citizen activist Dr. Romina Frendo and the Police, collaborated closely to uncover the truth behind these disturbing incidents.

Residents played a crucial role, generously offering footage from their home CCTV cameras. Meanwhile, Dr. Frendo tirelessly patrolled the area late into the night, working alongside Animal Welfare officers and law enforcement. Their persistent efforts paid off, leading to the arrest of a foreign national suspected of involvement. The investigation concluded with him being sentenced to two years in prison, a fine of €15,000 and a 40-year ban from owning animals, a significant victory in the fight against animal cruelty.

The community’s dedication was celebrated during the recent Animal Honours Awards, where Dr. Lydia Abela presented a special accolade to the residents who actively assisted with the investigation. Their vigilance and commitment exemplified the power of community in safeguarding vulnerable animals.

However, justice is rarely straightforward. The foreign national has the right to appeal his case, and his future remains uncertain. Nevertheless, this case has highlighted the importance of collective effort combining citizen vigilance, professional expertise, and law enforcement to protect animals from cruelty and ensure that offenders are held accountable. It’s a compelling reminder that when communities come together, they can make a real difference in fighting injustice and cruelty.
