The untimely death of Lorenzo Vella, Head of the European Commission Representation in Valletta, last Sunday at the age of 42 has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues.

In a moving statement posted on the Representation’s portal, Vella’s colleagues Nicolette Camilleri and David Schembri wrote about how, upon his appointment in June 2023, Vella injected fresh energy and vision. He understood the importance of reconnecting with the public after the pandemic, and actively sought to bring the European project closer to the Maltese people.

His dedication to European ideals was evident throughout his career: from his early days in student activism and leading the National Youth Council, to his work in the Maltese civil service, the Court of Auditors in Luxembourg, and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL). He later served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Malta to the EU, playing a key role during Malta’s 2017 Council presidency.

Vella’s resilience was tested when he was injured in the Brussels terrorist attacks on  22^nd March 2016, while expecting his first child with his wife Cheryl. Undeterred, he went on to serve as the Maltese health minister’s chief of staff during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, before becoming Malta’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Openness and collaboration were hallmarks of Vella’s leadership style. He fostered a team environment through open communication and a willingness to listen. He was known for his ability to bridge political divides, believing that a stronger Malta contributed to a stronger Europe.

In his final months, Vella bravely battled a terminal illness, continuing treatment even after initial setbacks. His primary concern was ensuring his wife Cheryl and children Elija and Yael, were aware of his strength and determination.

News of his passing triggered an outpouring of tributes, highlighting his sharp intellect, warmth, and the love and respect he commanded from colleagues and friends. President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, Prime Minister Robert Abela, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, and countless others from across his career path honoured his memory.

Final farewell on Thursday

A mass celebrating Lorenzo’s life will be held on Thursday, 22^nd August at 10am at Christ the King Basilica in Paola. He will be cremated afterwards. Family and friends are encouraged to wear colourful clothing, reflecting Lorenzo’s love for life.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Karl Vella Foundation and the Malta Community Chest Fund, charities supporting children and rare diseases, are appreciated. A donation box will be available at the church.
