Third woman to serve as President sworn in

Myriam Spiteri Debono is Malta’s 11th President.

Malta’s incoming Head of State, Dr Myriam Spiteri Debono, alongside her husband Dr Spiteri Debono, has begun her inauguration programme by leaving their Birkirkara home en route to St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.  Let’s take a look at the programme schedule.

– Arrival at St John’s Co-Cathedral of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister and Dr Lydia Abela, the President of Malta and Mrs Miriam Vella.

– Solemn Mass for Our Country concelebrated by the Archbishop of Malta, Mgr Charles J. Scicluna.

– At the end of the Solemn Mass, the Speaker, the President-Elect and Dr Spiteri Debono, the family of the President-Elect and the guests proceed on foot from St John’s Co-Cathedral to the Grand Master’s Palace.

– Guard of Honour of the Armed Forces of Malta marches from Freedom Square, in front of the building of the Parliament of Malta, to St George’s Square, Valletta.

– Dr Spiteri Debono is escorted to the Throne Room.

– The Speaker proceeds to the Throne Room and opens the Parliamentary Sitting. He addresses the Members of Parliament and guests present, and suspends the sitting for a few minutes.

–  The President and Mrs Vella, escorted by the Mounted Police, arrive in St George’s Square. They are welcomed by the Commander of the Armed Forces of Malta. The President is accorded a National Salute. The National Anthem is played. The President inspects the Guard of Honour.

– The President and Mrs Vella are escorted to the Pages’ Chamber where they meet with the Speaker and the President-Elect.

– The President and the President-Elect are escorted to the Throne Room by the Speaker.

– The Speaker and the President-Elect take their places on the dais and the Sitting resumes.

– Notary Myriam Spiteri Debono takes the Oath of Office as President of Malta. The Oath is signed by the President and countersigned by the Speaker.

– A fanfare is sounded by the Trumpeters of the Armed Forces of Malta and the Armed Forces of Malta fire a twenty-one-gun salute from the Saluting Battery.

– The President reads and signs the Proclamation declaring that she has assumed the functions of President of Malta. The Prime Minister countersigns the Proclamation. The Speaker adjourns the House.

– The President of Malta, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, addresses the distinguished guests.

–  The President and Dr Spiteri Debono, together with President Emeritus George Vella and Mrs Vella, are escorted to the main Palace balcony.

– The President and Dr Spiteri Debono, together with

President Emeritus George Vella and Mrs Vella, proceed to the Ambassadors’ Room, followed by the Prime Minister and Dr Abela, the Speaker, the Archbishop, the Chief Justice and Mrs Chetcuti, and the Presidents Emeriti together with their spouses.

– The President signs the Citations assuming the Headships of the Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika and the National Order of Merit, as well as Membership in the National Order of Merit in the grade of Companion of Honour. The Prime Minister countersigns the two documents in the presence of the Chancellor and the Registrar of the Xirka and of the Order.

– The President and Dr Spiteri Debono, together with the Prime Minister and Dr Abela, exit the Palace and proceed to St George’s Square. The President mounts the dais and is accorded a National Salute. The National Anthem is played. The President inspects the Guard of Honour.

– Flypast by the Air Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta.

–  The President and Dr Spiteri Debono, escorted by the Mounted Police, proceed to the War Memorial in Floriana. The President places a wreath at the foot of the Memorial.

– The Guard of Honour marches from St George’s Square, up Republic Street to Freedom Square, in front of the building of the Parliament of Malta.

– The President and Dr Spiteri Debono leave the War Memorial for Sant’Anton Palace in Attard, where they will be welcomed by the Palace staff.

– The Prime Minister and Dr Abela pay a courtesy call on the President and Dr Spiteri Debono at Sant’Anton Palace.

– The Leader of the Opposition and Mrs Grech pay a courtesy call on the President and Dr Spiteri Debono at Sant’Anton Palace.
