This piece is for those who consider refraining from going to vote as a good option. Although you may have very good reasons to lose interest in elections, coming 30th May, Malta will elect a Government that will continue shaping our Islands. And the first question you need to ask yourself is whom you are most comfortable to represent you.

This is not just about Government in the widest sense, but even in the elected members of parliament at an individual level. Although not every elected person becomes a minister or is appointed to some influential post, still, many MPs bring about changes and reforms. The humblest MP could be the one who provides that spark that could provoke change. Change that has the potential to bring better quality of life.

In each case, the disheartened, who opt not to vote, should be reminded of the power of each vote in determining the future. What will happen during the next international crisis, whether the rights and freedoms we gained would be restricted, if families are to be continue being empowered to enhance well-being etc.

Even if one thinks a single vote will not help much, it might be the vote that an aspiring candidate interprets as a sign of approval. Perhaps, your vote will be the one which makes a contestant be determined at the next elections.

And one’s vote is not an individual’s credit card to be used for one’s own personal benefit, the common good potential of that vote is the main determining factor.
