Malta’s 2025 deficit is 2.2% of GDP, significantly lower than many earlier projections and firmly on a trajectory of fiscal consolidation. This is the result of competent, strong, and disciplined governance under a Labour administration led by Prime Minister Robert Abela.

The significance of a 2.2% deficit goes beyond the headline figure. It shows a Labour government that is actively balancing growth with responsibility. Contrary to what used to happen under PN governments, public finances are not being corrected through austerity measures, but through sustained economic expansion and continued investment in families and businesses.

Revenue has strengthened, expenditure has been managed, and crucially, economic growth continues at a steady pace. This is what responsible governance looks like in practice: not ideological extremes, but steady calibration.

Debt figures remain comfortably below the Maastricht threshold, reinforcing Malta’s position as one of the more resilient economies in the European context. At a time when many EU states are struggling with persistent deficits and stagnating growth, our country is quietly consolidating its fiscal position while maintaining one of the strongest growth rates in the region.

The Labour Government’s approach has been consistent: protect households, support businesses, invest in long-term competitiveness, and maintain fiscal credibility.

The economy is expected to grow by 4 per cent in 2025, easing slightly to 3.7 per cent in 2026, then increasing again to 4.6 per cent by 2030.

Of course, the Nationalist Party and its acolytes will attempt to downplay the numbers or reframe them as temporary. But the trend is increasingly difficult to dismiss. Year after year, projections of fiscal deterioration have given way to better-than-expected outcomes.

In politics, rhetoric is cheap. Data is not. And the data is now pointing in one direction: Malta’s fiscal position is stronger, more stable, and more credible than many predicted, and the Labour Government is the one steering that outcome.
